Live Dangerously
Exhibition at the UCLA Hammer Museum
October 4, 2000 - January 7, 2001

"Live Dangerously" is an exhibition featuring the work of UCLA faculty
members Dana Cuff, Wes Jones, Greg Lynn, Thom Mayne, Dagmar
Richter, Robert Somol and Anthony Vidler, curated by Sylvia Lavin, and
created in collaboration with graduate students in the Department of
Architecture and Urban Design, University of California, Los Angeles
(UCLA).

The show presents designs for life in the 21st century and will focus on
such issues as the integration of new technologies into the domestic
setting, contemporary and future modes of manufacturing, and
emerging realignments between the public and private spheres. Material
on view will include models and drawings of design projects investigating
new modes of dwelling from the house of tomorrow to today's
ubiquitous hotel room, as well as critical investigations into the history
and theory of forces currently reconfiguring the domestic environment.
The exhibition will demonstrate how the academic context not only
trains future generations of architects but also provides a way for critical
research to inform the practices of architects working today.

The UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design is
internationally recognized as a leader in architectural education. The
faculty is highly esteemed for setting the standards of progressive
design and for its interest in advanced technology.

Curator Sylvia Lavin is the Chair of the Department of Architecture and
Urban Design, UCLA. She is the author of "Quatremere de Quincy and
the Invention of a Modern Language of Architecture" (MIT).

A complete list of graduate students participating in the exhibition will be
available soon. Some of the students whose work will be included in the
exhibition are also representing the United States, with Professor Greg
Lynn, (along with Columbia University students and Professor Hani
Rashid) at the U.S. Pavilion at the Seventh International Architecture
Biennale in Venice, Italy. On view from June 18 through October 29, the
Biennale is one of the most innovative and prestigious forums for
exhibiting architecture internationally.

Lynn was recently named one of seven people who are changing the face
of design in "Time" magazine ("Innovators, Time 100: The Next Wave,"
July 17, 2000).

Dana Cuff is the author of "Architecture: The Story of Practice" and "The
Provisional City: Los Angeles Stories of Architecture and Urbanism." In
addition to conducting a design studio at UCLA, Wes Jones maintains a
small technology-oriented architecture practice. "Instrumental Form," a
monograph of the firm's work, was recently published by the Princeton
Architectural Press. Thom Mayne founded Morphosis architects in 1972
and was also the co-founder of SCI-Arc, the Southern California
Institute of Architecture. Mayne has lectured and taught at universities
around the world. Dagmar Richter is a Professor of Architecture and
Urban Design at UCLA. The Princeton Architectural Press will publish a
monograph of her work this year. Robert Somol is a principal in the firm
Pollari X Somol. He is the editor of "Autonomy and Ideology" (Moncelli
1997) and is currently a visiting scholar at the Canadian Centre for
Architecture. Anthony Vidler is Professor and Chair of Art History and
Professor of Architecture at UCLA. His most recent book, "Warped
Space: Art, Architecture and Anxiety," will be published in the fall of
2000.

"Live Dangerously" is organized by the Department of Architecture and
Urban Design, the School of the Arts and Architecture, UCLA, for the
UCLA Hammer Museum.
