Conceptual artist/photographer Rena Small has captured the hands of the most prominent artists of our time. Andy Warhol, Richard Diebenkorn, Elizabeth Murray and Ed Ruscha are only a few of the over 100 artists hands that she has photographed. Displayed in large grids of silver gelatin prints, Smalls installations function as a powerful and revealing tribute to creators of art, and their hands.
For over 15 years Ive observed a mysterious presence of emotions veiled in hands. My goal is to create a standard for hand portraiture that honors all artists. Hands, not faces, are a reservoir of expression. To me, hands are a study of the human soul reflected in the mirror of my camera.
Rena Small has an M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
