Ruth Bachofner Gallery is pleased to present Travel Notes, an exhibition by Marco Casentini. There will be a reception for the artist Saturday, April 15, 4 - 6 pm.
In his second solo exhibition at the gallery, Marco Casentinis formal ingenuity combined with his unique vision of the world, presents a series of sophisticated geometric abstractions. The artists alkyd paintings explore the spatial dynamics of color, texture and form.
As the exhibition title indicates, the paintings in Travel Notes are inspired by the artists travels throughout America and Italy where he lives and works with an occasional two or three months stay in California. The paintings reductive quality ring true as notes of the places he has seen. Four or five hard-edge shapes in various sizes and colors interact to suggest the presence of a landscape. Dominant and subordinate forms, cool and warm, vibrant and subdued colors recede and overlap to assert spare, illusionistic spaces.
The artists bold color palette expresses a definitive sense of light a certain place may exude. Stark blue and sand-colored rectangles compose San Diego Bay; a small yellow horizontal band accents a series of cool blue, multi-textured rectangles to form California Window, a hard-edge homage to Diebenkorn. While Casentinis paintings suggest a landscape, the spatial and color tensions unify the surface into a vibrant, cohesive whole. The striking compositions in Travel Notes are consistently compelling as they gracefully combine formal abstraction with references to the light and space surrounding us.
