The techniques of relief and intaglio printing are as old as printmaking itself; by contrast, the art of lithography is a relatively new one. This summer, in conjunction with our discussion series, we will present two exhibitions that explore these media.
LEONARD EDMONDSON and WERNER DREWES: Intaglio vs. Relief (July 10 - August 7, 2004) will focus upon works by these artists. Influenced by Stanley William Hayters technique of viscosity etching, LEONARD EDMONDSONs etchings have a wonderful sense of texture and space, employing both bold colors and a full tonal range of black and white. WERNER DREWESs Bauhaus roots evolved through expressionism into bold black and white and color woodcuts. Although we focus upon these two masters of their techniques, we will also show works by other artists: intaglios by LEE CHESNEY, YNEZ JOHNSTON, JOHN PAUL JONES and HOWARD WARSHAW; relief prints by JOHN BERNHARDT, STEPHEN de HOSPODAR, PAUL LANDACRE and STANTON MACDONALD-WRIGHT
THE TAMARIND LITHOGRAPHY WORKSHOP (August 4 - September 4, 2004) will present lithographs created at this ground-breaking print workshop. Focusing upon the 1960s and 1970s, we will include works by founders CLINTON ADAMS and JUNE WAYNE as well as the many important artists that the Tamarind Lithography Workshop has hosted since its opening in 1960, including JOHN ALTOON, RUTH ASAWA, WILLIAM BRICE, BRUCE CONNER, MATSUMI KANEMITSU, RICO LEBRUN, JOHN MCLAUGHLIN, LEE MULLICAN, EMERSON WOELFFER and ADJA YUNKERS.
