The long awaited new exhibition, "Bloom", by contemporary artist Deborah Paswaters will be on display at Marion Meyer Contemporary Art beginning May 19 through June 30, 2001 at the North Coast Gallery.

The works featured are the first new canvases by Paswaters in over ayear and demonstrate a remarkably fresh essence and richness which further lend credence to this young artist's oeuvre.

Conceived since Paswaters' objects series, "Found", last spring, thisnew series combines the artist's recent interest in mythology with bold and stylistic floral renderings. Betraying a confident palette, these subtly textural works display abounding atmospheres, melding classicaland modern technique and imagery while maintaining Paswaters' well-known abstract figurative style. Speaking from her Laguna Beach studio, Paswaters explained: "As always, I only paint what I love…the humanfigure…the mystique of beautiful-yet-changing flowers. What you see on my canvases are what I am capturing at that moment. I won't do it any other way."

Recently, Paswaters became immersed in mythology while working at her studio in Hana, Hawaii. While there, she assimilated traditional culture from the local native Hawaiians with more common myths. "In understanding the Hawaiian rituals, I began to correlate their traditions with those of the Greeks and the Romans. It is fascinating how such disperate cultures can share such similar beliefs. I very much wanted to put on canvas what I was absorbing. As I compared the commanding fables of the Hawaiians with those of the better known myths I found the urge to channel that energy into painting, depicting thiscommon thread which is humanity, both ancient and current. It was mystical and I believe the magic translates to my canvases."

Working in a smaller scale than in her previous exhibitions, the newworks display a fresh intimacy while maintaining Paswaters' powerful imagery. The textural quality of this newest body of canvases further effectuates Paswaters painting authority and her followers will not be disappointed in the outcome. "I had to step away from pure painting inorder to reach this point. The exploration into ceramics in conjunction with found objects in my last show threw my work further toward the dimensionality of painting. I still feel the best is yet to come, and I'm intrigued with the direction these works are going."
