Yuichi Hibi Good boy, 1992 [printed 2007], silver gelatin, 11 x 14 inches.
Michael Dawson Gallery is pleased to host a special exhibition of photographs by contemporary photographer Yuichi Hibi. The exhibition will be on view from Thursday, April 2nd through Saturday, May 9th. During the exhibition, the gallery will be open from Thursday through Saturday between 11 am and 5 pm and by appointment.
The exhibition features work from Hibi's latest book, Neco. The title refers to the Japanese word for cat. A 2008 publication from Nazraeli Press, this elaborate artist's book explores the complex role of the cat in Japanese culture as both a symbol of good fortune and calamity. The photographs in Neco, also encourage the viewer to reflect on the joys and perils of human experience. Signed copies of the limited edition book are available for sale.
Hibi's early work dates from the late 1980s when he moved to New York to pursue a career as an actor and filmmaker. His first monograph, Imprint, was published by Nazraeli Press in 2005. This series of quietly intense images, taken in New York and Japan, evoke a sense of longing and isolation as they find order and meaning in overlooked places and things. In 2006, Nazraeli published Hibi's photographic project with Robert Frank titled, A Weekend With Mr. Frank, appearing in the publisher's highly regarded One Picture Book series.
Please visit the gallery website where you will find a complete inventory of prints in the exhibition as well as a link to an article by Bonnie Yochelson about Yuichi Hibi's photographs of New York that appeared on the front page of the New York Times web site on December 20th, 2008.
