Downtown Pomona gallery dba256 has brought together a collection of conceptual collages in Sum of Parts, a show whose abstract elements prove that intangible entities can in fact be documented. The show will run through April 26, with a reception open to the public on Saturday, April 12th, 6-10pm (during Pomona’s monthly second Saturday Art Walk.) Featured artists include: Irene Abraham, Lisa Adams, Hollis Cooper, Rebecca Hamm, Virginia Katz, Rebecca Niederlander, and Coleen Sterritt.
Sum of Parts is a collection of multi-media work from artists manipulating the repetition of images or materials, and communicating connection through the suspension and arrangement of fragmented elements. Historically, collage originated as an art form in wartime Europe, when people began finding their security and lifestyles threatened by forced relocation, political persecution, or economic uncertainty. As access to space and materials became increasingly unattainable, people began using common household items to make art, such as newspaper clippings, old photographs, or fabric scraps. The works shown in Sum of Parts preserve the transience of their origins, but without the limitations on time, space, or materials, the artists have stretched the nature of the documentary function of collage, recording and exploring the movement of the spirit rather than specific events or moments in time. Three dimensional work is represented here in pieces by Sterritt, Niederlander and Katz with paintings by Abraham, Adams and Hamm and a site specific installation by Cooper.
Sum of Parts is gallery director Andi Campognone’s third show of 2008, following Selections from New American Paintings 2007, Pacific Coast Edition, and Naked Truth: Figure as Form and Spirit.
New American Paintings is a national publication and competition that features America’s best emerging artists, and Selections from New American Paintings 2007, Pacific Coast Edition at dba256 was the first exhibition curated to honor the winners. Naked Truth: Figure as Form and Spirit was dba256’s first exhibit to present a range of work from local emerging artists to nationally established masters, all in celebration and examination of the most celebrated artistic subject, the human figure.
dba256 is proud to present an installation by Jay Merryweather in its project space, The PO@256, which opens during the Pomona ArtWalk on April 12th and will continue through May 3rd.
dba256 has recently been noted in the press for making a record-breaking sale. On January’s second Saturday Art Walk, the gallery negotiated the sale of a Karl Benjamin piece for $43,000. Benjamin, a famous hard-edge modernist painter, was featured in dba256’s inaugural show last fall titled Inland Emperors. The sale marked the biggest single sale in Pomona’s Art Walk history, and means big things for dba256, whose mission is to enhance cultural education in the community. dba256 is the only serious commercial art gallery paired with a wine bar in California, and those who visit can enjoy boutique wines, taste flights, or sip on local micro-brews while they view the art. What is exciting for owners Andi Campognone and Ron Faris is the fact that they are not simply bringing culture to the community, but that they are bringing attention to the flourishing artistic contributions of the Inland Empire.
