Dave Newman’s “Life as I See it” Show Opens at the Culture Shop Gallery on November 12th
Los Angeles, CA – 15 wall pieces, a selection of sculptural pieces and several items of furniture will be showcased in mixed media artist, Dave Newman’s exhibition at the Culture Shop Gallery in Santa Monica from November 12th – January 15th. This is the first time this collection of work is being shown in Los Angeles and Newman will be in Los Angeles from Prescott, Arizona, for the gallery opening on Friday, November 12th from 5 pm to 8 pm.
With a love for the art, design and everyday objects of 1950s including fast cars, transistor radios and rock ‘n roll, television, motels, roadside diners, hero cowboys and stars of the big screen, Newman’s style captures both time and place beautifully. “My work is heavily influenced by life’s ubiquities – signs, buildings, advertisements – as well as music, nostalgia and popular cultural icons.” Dave says.
Newman is motivated by a concern for preserving the past by searching through discarded treasures. 3-D wood and metal objects attached with staples, rivets and screws literally add a dimension to his hand built wood canvases. “Sometimes, my art begins on a highway where there is a spectacular view or where I’ve found something interesting on the side of the road.” Dave said. “I use my own photographs, vintage periodicals, silk-screened images, acrylic paint, and found objects of all kinds to weave stories into my work.”
There is a lightness and an intricate nature to Newman’s work, a strong sense of color and design that he captures uniquely in each piece, and a sense of nostalgia that touches and intrigues. “My paintings are created with an intentionally humorous, whimsical feel, which is how I view life, “ Dave has said. “I want people to look and look again at my work because there is always something else to see.”
Born in Long Beach, CA and raised in Anaheim, Newman spent many years as a successful entrepreneur before launching his art career. In the early 1990s after years of creating work and developing his style during off-hours, he rented a studio and began his journey into art. By 1994, his work was being shown and he was quickly cultivating a captivated audience of collectors.
Dave Newman has been in the Culture Shop Gallery collection for more than two years; “Life as I See It” is his third show for the gallery. “Dave’s work touches a very broad spectrum,” said Sand Brim, owner of the Culture Shop Gallery. “His work is urban, it’s retro, it’s complex and unique, and it appeals to a lot people. His audience is growing rapidly and we are very proud to be his gallery of choice in Los Angeles.”
