Llyn Foulkes, L. A. legend and master painter, will be having two shows simultaneously at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica.  Foulkes came to Los Angeles in 1957 to attend art school. He left Chouinard in 1959 after winning first prize in both painting and drawing at the school. His first one man show was presented at Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles in 1961. Foulkes won the Paris Biennale in 1967 and was included in the Sao Paulo Biennale the same year. He was a star in Helter Skelter: L. A. Art in the 90’s at MoCA. He was the only artist from the sixties to have a recent painting in the Sunshine Noir: Art in  LA 1960-1997 exhibition that traveled in Europe and ended at the Armand Hammer Museum, in 1998, here in L. A. He was well represented in the recent show of Los Angeles art at the Pompidou in Paris.

Always a rebel, he has rallied for years against the corporate takeover of art. As Michael Duncan, in Art In America, says, “His espousal of illusionistic space is a moral commitment, designed to hook viewers into a point of view that offers an alternative to preprogrammed corporate imagery. In this age of mass-media acquiescence, his assumption of the burden of American culture makes him a brave, unique figure.”

“The Lost Frontier,” a large picture with incredible depth about the death of Los Angeles, which took the artist years to complete, will be on display at Patricia Faure Gallery. Recent work by Katy Stone will also be presented.

At the same time, he will be showing smaller new works in an exhibition he calls, “Restoration.” Memories that have influenced him over his artistic career, embodying skills from the past and present at Craig Krull Gallery. Also showing at Craig Krull will be Dean Stockwell, actor and artist whom Foulkes met in 1962 and established an instant artistic and spiritual bond.

Mr. Foulkes is represented in New York by Kent Gallery.
