Lawrence Asher Gallery is proud to present Corsets, Composites and Cloaks by Sherry Brody and Cracks by James Scott, two accomplished international artists exhibiting works new and not so new.  This mixed media, multi-dimensional extravaganza highlights exquisite, recent works displaying dazzling color in imaginative mediums yielding an original gestalt of contemporary art.  Please join the artists for an opening reception Saturday, October 15th from 6 – 10pm. Lawrence Asher Gallery, 5858 Wilshire Blvd., is located directly across the street from the La Brea Tar Pits and LACMA.

Sherry Brody graces the halls of Lawrence Asher Gallery with a wild show of creative zeal.  She exhibits for us a sampling of her recent works in two- and three-dimensional forms.  Her storied and accomplished past includes collaborations with Miriam Schapiro and the Feminist Art Movement spearheaded by the famed Judy Chicago.  Sherry’s contributions to this American art movement are showcased by her Lingerie Pillows exhibit from that important era. More recently, painted canvas “tiles” build an impressive mosaic employing elements of precise design and playful color.  In a rare, important display of all her panache, Ms. Brody reveals a selection of her painted people/canvases.  We are honored to bring you this frequently published, museum exhibited master creator.  Sherry is an alumnus of UCLA and later, California Institute of the Arts. She has contributed work to museum-exhibitions and many prestigious publications in her rich and rewarding career.  Dollhouse (from Womanhouse, 1972) can be found in the Permanent Collection of the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.  Sherry lives in downtown Los Angeles in one of the original artists’ neighborhood there.

James Scott presents his recent series of three-dimensional wall sculptures that he refers to as “Cracks.”  Cracks are the fissures that appear through time in walls, floors and ceilings, in the ground, in the street and on the sidewalks.  All around us are cracks.  Cracks are made by wind and rain, by leaks, by waves, by the elements.  Cracks are made by the sun.  Cracks are made by snow and ice.  Cracks can appear suddenly and expand into caverns or gorges or canyons at great speed.  Or cracks can mature over millions of years. Cracks are spaces where air passes through allowing entry to be made where life can form, where shelter can be formed.  Cracks let in the light.James Scott.
Mr. Scott grew up in England, studying painting and theater design at the Slade School of Fine Art.   His interest in photography and filmmaking brought him early success and an opportunity to direct his first feature film at age 21.  In 1983, he won an Academy Award for his film, “A Shocking Accident.” James abandoned his career in the Industry in 1989 and returned to painting, influenced by the landscape of Los Angeles and his cinematic background, while the roots in his father’s work, noted English painter, William Scott, remain.  James lives in Los Angeles with his wife and daughter.
