Los Angeles, CA - Anelia Lazaroff http://www.anelialazaroff.com pays attention to the constantly changing light-soaked scenery during her obligatory long Los Angeles drives, hence the name of her show "The Scenic Route." Looking at her mobilesque hanging and wall sculptures, you can see how she is fascinated by the various ways changing natural and manmade light mediate how objects look. Light shines through them, bounces off them, creates silhouettes of them, or gives them an inner glow. In turn, her complex interwoven plastic and metal biomorphic-shaped planes color, reflect, and translucently refract the light around them. Through her pieces, she seeks to uplift you, as does light, appealing to you on the abstract, emotive, and sensual levels. Lazaroff's interest in modules, patterns, rhythm bases her solidly in the 20th Century Art tradition. However, she advances the field by introducing 21st Century Art appeals to architecture, design, and art installation.
The celebration of Lazaroff's exhibition is on Saturday, September 22, 2007 (which is also the artist's birthday), from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m., featuring the usual great organic food prepared with the help of our master vegan chef, John Saslow. The live music TBA. The exhibit is up until October 27, 2007.
We're located two miles from Chinatown, at 1020 East Fourth Place, between Molino and Mateo Streets, in the back of the 500 Molino Street Lofts, #102, between the Fourth Street Bridge's (on the LA River side of downtown) two on/off ramps. See our website http://dangerouscurve.org for directions, pictures, and updates.
More about the Artist and the Art
Lazaroff was born in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1978. She left Bulgaria with her family when she was three years old, and grew up in Southern California. Both her parents are successful commercial ceramic installation artists who share their creative practices and education with her. Besides her parents, her influences are many and varied: from Edgar Degas, through Keith Haring, to living artists. She values art "that is hopeful and uplifting" and is interested in "the way the natural world coexists with the manmade one," with emphasis on the "man" in "manmade."
