The Martini Glass as Art

What does it mean to share spirits with others? For thousands of years, imbibing vessels have been central to ceremony and socializing. Sculptor Thomas Mann asked artists to interpret what the simple chalice-like martini glass shape evoked in each of them. The eclectic result was called The Martini Show, which premiered in Mann’s New Orleans gallery as a benefit for CERF (Craft Emergency Relief Fund), an organization providing aid to artist victims of disasters such as Katrina.

For the Venice show, artist Boris Bally of Providence, RI used a “38 Special” from a gun amnesty program to create his “One Easy Shot” glass that speaks out against the “plague of misused handguns” in our country. San Diego metalsmith Lisa Slovis Mandel married her signature flowing forms to the geometrical martini shape to create a marriage in which curve embraces line. Other works incorporate glass, wood, precious and non-precious metals along with various found objects, feathers, and even carpet scraps. Alive with visual and tactile innovation -- and enhanced by Level vodka martinis -- this show should not be missed.
