“Around Midnight” Papillon Gallery Contemporary Space
Nick Fyhrie (pronounced “Fury”) received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art from UCLA in 2006. He studied in the School of Arts and Architecture working in various media under such renowned artists as Don Suggs, Cathie Opie, and Roger Herman. The paintings in “Around Midnight,” are comprised of dynamic figurative scenes of youthful decadence. Fyhrie masters a brilliant tension, contrasting bright acrylic colors with neutral oil hues. We are invited to enter the world of contemporary post-adolescent interaction that immediately suggests party “play time.” However, the youthful characters are subverted by ambiguous displacement in a flat, yet complex composition of an incomplete narrative.
Papillon Gallery
Papillon Gallery specializes in European and American paintings and sculpture from the period of 1890-1950, with an emphasis on the School of Paris. Papillon Gallery is also the exclusive representative of several American Modernist artist estates, including Los Angeles artist Carl Hugo Beetz, and New York artists Anna Walinska, Bernard Glasgow, August Mosca, and Elijah Silverman. Nick Fyhrie’s “Around Midnight” is the inaugural exhibition of the new Papillon Gallery Contemporary Space, featuring monthly showings of works s by emerging artists alongside the gallery’s regular inventory. Openings will normally be held in conjunction with the “Open House on the Avenues” West Hollywood art walk, first Thursday of every month.
