OPEN CALL
Most juried shows are fundraisers for alternative spaces and non-profit organizations. Emerging Artists send reproductions of their art and a payment to have an art world powerbroker or personality (usually a curator, gallerist or critic) accept or reject the work for an exhibit. Los Angeles art critic Mat Gleason saw the occasion to raise money for the non-profit i-5 Gallery as a chance to break the mold and confront the artists one-on-one. All of the work in OPEN CALL was selected by the juror with the artists present. Many artists had some or all of their submissions turned away, not by a cowardly letter in the mail – but in person.
58 artists survived the process with one or more of their artworks to be included in a festive look at what is going on in the REAL creative sphere of Southern California.
