Women Painters West announces the opening of its third theme show of 2004, Small Offerings, An Exhibition of Small Images, on Saturday, June 5th (Reception 2 6pm) through July 3rd at The Folk Tree Collection in Pasadena. Franklyn Leigel, Instructor at Otis Art Institute, is the Juror of Selection and Awards.
WPW, one of the leading Southern California art associations, is a non-profit organization that seeks to bring together talented professional artists in the spirit of friendship, artistic expression, education and philanthropy. With a legacy spanning more than 80 years, their goal is as important now as it was when they held their first exhibition in Laguna Beach in 1921. A recent juror, Scott Canty, states that WPW has a strong standing in the art scene here in LA, and a long tradition of quality and established artists. Independent top-notch jurors from outside the organization, such as prominent artists, curators, critics and gallery directors, have given their exhibitions an outstanding reputation of quality and diversity. The juror list includes notables such as Renee Amitai, Molly Barnes, Joni Gordon, Don Lagerberg, Louise Lewis, Barbara Gilbert and Lydia Takeshita. Reviews and juror comments have described WPW shows as
reflective, poetic, elegant
with aspects of color abstraction, minimalism, expressionism, modernism, and cubism
connecting cultures across the millennia
observations which truly reflect the diversity, depth, versatility, and creativity of over 200 artists and their artwork.
Two additional exhibitions are on the horizon for WPW this year, including The Brand Library Art Galleries (Glendale), August 28-October 12, 2004 and a Fall Show at the new VIVA Gallery in Sherman Oaks, October 25 November 20, 2004.
In addition to their exhibitions, Women Painters West holds monthly luncheon meetings with renowned guest speakers. This years roster includes Lita Albuquerque, Eleanor Antin, Kent Twitchell with Lisa Adams slated for their May meeting. WPW also offers philanthropic aid to the community and provides annual scholarship grants to emerging artists. The 2004 WPW Scholarship recipient is Hillary Gruenberg, a student in the Art Mentor Program at Santa Monica College.
Membership is by application and juried selection once a year. (Exhibition/Membership information available upon request. Contact Susan Kuss, Exhibit Chair (818) 780-2512 or Carole Gillin, Membership (805) 578-0472).
